Premise
From this article, you will learn two simple ideas for vegetable decoration. Use any edible leaves to create a pair of shoe thongs and a vegetable shuttlecock.
YOU WILL NEED
- A curved blade or straight blade paring knife
- Optional: a serrated blade paring knife
- A chopping board
- A tomato
- Some spinach leaves (or other big leaves instead)
- One baby cucumber
- Some carrot
Practice
Any edible leave is able to be used in theses two ideas. In addition, these two vegetable decorations are not just quick to process, but also look delightful on your plate.
1. Spinach shoe thongs
When you start choosing an ingredient, any big leaves are good for making this decoration on your plate. For example, I am using spinach.
In order to make a pair of shoe thongs look the same, please try to find two leaves that are similar size and shape. After that, use the point of a paring knife to cut a 1 cm long line in the leaf tip.

After that, leave a 0.5 to 0.8 cm gap from both sides of the middle margin of the leaf and carve a half circle between the base of the leaf. You might find that the centre vein is strong, you need to make a clear cut on it.

Do the same process to another leaf.

After that, take the stem to insert into the leaf tip. Gently put it through the hole.

Process the same way for the other leaf. As such, you will have a pair of spinach shoe thongs.

2. Vegetable shuttlecock
About the name of this food art, I named it after Chines shuttlecock, which is like hacky sack. Actually, it’s a kind of sport that you kick an object with your feet. The aim of the game is to keep it in the air. If you are interested in knowing more information about shuttlecock kicking please see references.
2-1 Prepare shuttlecock base
Firstly, remove the top of the stemhead off from a baby cucumber, then cut two segments about 2 cm thick each.

Use the point of a paring knife to dig a groove in 1 cm deep and turn the blade 360 degrees.

According to what kind of vegetables that you are going to insert into the cucumber base. You should create a 0.5 to 0.8 diameter circle on it. If you are going to insert more vegetables in the top, please extend the groove size.

2-2 Decorating the shuttlecock
As we are going to use a cucumber base to hold some colourful vegetables on top, please find any vegetable that you have to use as garnish. As long as you are able to cut it with a pin shape at the end, then you can insert it into the cucumber base.
2-2-1 decoration with carrot
Cut a slice of carrot and trim the one side with a sharp edge.

Cut the sliced carrot to make a very narrow triangle, and keep the sharp edge side of the carrot with a pinpoint.

After that, make an incision in the centre of the thick side.

2-2-2 Decoration with tomato
Carve a 2/3 circle shape out of the tomato and make only one side have a sharp edge. Keep the thickness of the tomato on the straight side of the circle.

After that, make an incision in the centre of the straight side of the circle.

2-2-3 Connect triangle carrot and circle tomato together
Finally, let the incision on the carrot align with that of the tomato. Then push each other together to help them stick well.

2-3 Put them all together
Take a couple of spinach leaves or any other edible leaves and place them together with the carrot and tomato decorations. Insert them all together inside of the cucumber base.

Once you have done the vegetable shuttlecock, check the decorations on top of the cucumber. Make sure they stay well. As such, you should adjust the angle of the decorations and let it face the target on the service plate.

Payoff
The idea that you learned, a pair of spinach shoe thongs, is an interesting idea on the plate, but it looks too simple for garnish. Therefore, if you are able to play around with it using other vegetable decorations to create a more attractive look, it will look better for it.
About the vegetable shuttlecock, you are able to make more of them to garnish your plate. It’s easy and quick food art on your plate. Try to find other vegetables to replace what we are using on the top of the cucumber base in this article. Try to find your own food art invention with this simple idea.
